Phnom Penh Completes Rehabilitation of Boeung Tumpun Canal

Phnom Penh: The rehabilitation of the nearly 4km long Boeung Tumpun Canal in Phnom Penh is complete. The canal, which is now flowing freely, will help alleviate flooding in five of the capital’s districts. The rehabilitation project has taken about four months.

Director of the Drainage and Pumping Unit in the Phnom Penh Department of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Duong Chansarath, says the work has entailed clearing the canal of over 12,000 cubic metres of grass and garbage. Its drainage unit has also been upgraded, while a new pumping and wastewater treatment plant has been built.

Boeung Tumpun Canal stretches for a total of 3,710 metres and is 30 metres wide. It connects Stung Meanchey Canal to the Boeung Tumpun Station on Street 371. The canal plays an important role in releasing floodwater from Por Senchey, Sen Sok, Toul Kork and some parts of Chamkarmorn, as well as 7 Makara.

Mr. Chansarath has requested members of the public to please start storing their garbage properly until garbage collection day and not throw rubbish into the canal, in order to keep it flowing and avoid flooding.
